House Budget Committee Targets Human Needs Programs for Cuts
Despite growing calls to prevent cuts in health, education, and other domestic programs, the House Budget Committee approved a FY 2007 budget resolution that is close to $10.3 billion short of the cost of providing this year's level of services for annually appropriated (discretionary) programs. Over five years, the cuts to the annually funded programs would swell to $167 billion.

Senate Addresses Immigration While Thousands Demonstrate In Support of Immigrants
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a draft immigration reform bill on March 27 that largely follows the McCain-Kennedy bill (S. 1033) creating a guest worker program and a path to legal permanent residence
for undocumented immigrants.

Line Item Veto Proposal More Sweeping Than It Appears
The Bush Administration's proposed Legislative Line Item Veto Act of 2006 has been introduced in the House and Senate (H.R. 4890, S. 2381) and has received support from Republican leaders and some Congressional Democrats, while advocates point out that the law would give sweeping powers to the President that few on Capitol Hill fully appreciate.
