• House Approves Agriculture Spending Bill
  On June 8, the House voted 208 to 18 to approve H.R. 2744, a bill funding the Agriculture Department for fiscal year 2006. The bill provides funding for certain nutrition programs, as described below.

• House Cuts Juvenile Justice Programs; Rejects President's Cuts to Community Development
  Programs aimed at preventing youth crime and violence and strengthening the juvenile justice system have suffered dramatic declines in funding in recent years. Yesterday the House voted to continue that trend, when it approved H.R. 2862 , a bill funding the Departments of State, Justice, and Commerce and other agencies by a vote of 418 to 7.

• Bill Funding Departments of Labor, HHS, Education Moves in House
  A bill setting fiscal year 2006 spending levels for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education was approved by the House Appropriations Committee on June 16. The full house may consider the bill next week.

• Social Security Pro-Privatization Forces Divided on Strategy
  After months of debate and public events, Republicans in Congress are still trying to write Social Security legislation. In the Senate, Charles Grassley (R-IA), Chairman of the Finance Committee, wants to produce a bill before the August recess, but at this time a majority of his committee do not support legislation that creates private accounts.
