| According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), nearly 35 million Americans - including 13 million children - live in households that experience hunger or are at risk of hunger. More than one in ten households in the United States are "food insecure." These families frequently skip meals or eat too little, sometimes going without food. Those who have access to some food often have lower quality diets or must resort to seeking emergency food because they cannot always afford the food they need. Every day one in five Americans receives nutrition assistance through one or more of the 15 federal nutrition assistance programs, such as food stamps, school lunch, school breakfast, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
