National data can mask significant differences among states. For example, in 2003, 32.3 percent of all families in America had incomes below $35,000. But in Mississippi, New Mexico, and West Virginia, more than 44 percent of families had incomes this low. Similarly, in five states, more than one-quarter of all children were poor in 2003, compared with 17.6 percent of children nationwide.
CHN compiles sources of state data and analyses about labor and employment, poverty, state budget issues, housing, health care, education, disability, children and general resources.
