| On November 18, the U.S. House of Representatives voted narrowly to make $50 billion in budget cuts, many of which target human needs programs, and then came home for a Thanksgiving break. (For a reminder of how this bill hurts people in need, click here: http://www.chn.org/issues/opportunityforall/wrongchoices.html ) Now they are back in Washington, and they are trying to enact a package of tax breaks, more than half of which will go to millionaires. The Senate and House will try to work out the differences between their budget-cutting bills before Christmas, and they will probably have to wait until they return from their break next year to work out the differences between their tax break bills. Once again, the toll-free number 800-426-8073 , made available by the American Friends Service Committee, can be used the week of December 12 to reach the Capitol switchboard. From there you can be connected to your Representative. Even if you are not sure who your Representative is, the people at the switchboard can figure it out for you and connect you. Then you can hang up and call back two more times to be directed to both your Senators. For a flier with the information you need to call, click here: http://www.chn.org/pdf/DecemberCallInFlier.pdf . All over the country, state and local organizations are planning press conferences, Congressional district office visits, town halls and other activities to express opposition to the cuts in human needs programs that are being made to pay towards tax breaks for millionaires. To find an event in your area, click here: http://www.chn.org/pdf/listofevents.pdf Faith community leaders from Call to Renewal and Sojourners are organizing "Vigils for a Moral Budget" on Wednesday, December 14th all over the country. Information on events is available at: http://www.demaction.org/dia/organizations/Sojo/event/distributedEventSignup.jsp?distributed_event_KEY=125 . These vigils will follow a vigil in Washington, D.C. and related civil disobedience by national leaders of the faith community in the U.S. Capitol earlier in the day. => To Budget and Appropriations Main Page |
