State-by-State Data on Human Needs

June 14, 2012

National data can mask significant differences among states. For example, in 2003, 32.3 percent of all families in America had incomes below $35,000. But in Mississippi, New Mexico, and West Virginia, more than 44 percent of families had incomes this low. Similarly, in five states, more than one-quarter of all children were poor in 2003, compared with 17.6 percent of children nationwide.
