Editor’s note: Deborah Weinstein, Executive Director of the Coalition on Human Needs, issued the following statement Tuesday, July 10 in response to the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court poses grave risks to workers, consumers, and all Americans who seek legal protections against those who would deny them health coverage, voting and workplace rights, or endanger them with predatory lending or an unsafe environment.

“In addition, at a time when President Trump faces legal peril on a number of fronts, Judge Kavanaugh has made disquieting statements with regard to whether a President, while in office, can be held accountable by the judicial system for his actions. This is the United States; we have no kings. No person is above the law.

“Over the coming weeks and months, we hope members of the U.S. Senate will conduct due diligence with regard to Judge Kavanaugh’s views in such areas as labor, consumer protection, health care, environmental protection, and the checks and balances among the three branches of government. Much in his existing record should warn of a dangerous tilt away from safeguards for working and/or vulnerable Americans.”
