But under a special provision of the 1974 law that established the modern budget process\, it would require 60 votes to sustain the appeal.” \nThat is\, Vice President Harris could rule that a provision (for example\, raising the minimum wage) was allowable\, and it would take 60 votes to overrule that decision.  By the infrequency of this move\, it is clear it would not be done lightly. \nWe need lots of people to contact Congress in order for the American Rescue Plan to pass.  Please help by forwarding this request to your lists for individuals to click and send emails to their senators and representative: \nPlease tell Congress to enact President Biden’s new COVID rescue plan. \nThe $1.9 trillion package\, according to the New York Times\, “includes more than $400 billion to combat the pandemic directly\, including money to accelerate vaccine deployment and to safely reopen most schools within 100 days. An additional $350 billion would help state and local governments bridge budget shortfalls\, while the plan would also include a dramatic increase in tax credits to help lift children\, families\, and workers out of poverty\, $1\,400 direct payments to individuals\, more generous unemployment benefits\, federally mandated paid leave for workers\, food and housing aid\, and large subsidies for child care costs.” \nThe essential legislation also provides critical aid to renters\, people threatened with or experiencing homelessness\, households unable to pay heat or water bills\, and offers an extension of the eviction and foreclosure moratoria. The pandemic blew a hole in our economy.  In mid-September\, the Census Bureau will release its annual poverty\, income\, and health insurance statistics for 2019.  Census has also collected new Household Pulse survey data\, telling us about economic security now.  There’s a lot we can learn from 2019\, while still recognizing that conditions are painfully different for millions of Americans today. \nThis webinar will prepare you for what we’ll learn about 2019\, how to get and use the data for your state or city\, and how it compares to new data showing alarming numbers of households with less earnings\, going without food\, falling behind in rent\, and lacking health insurance. \nNationally known economist Jared Bernstein will predict what we can expect to see in the 2019 data and compare it to today’s economic crisis.  Poverty expert Arloc Sherman will tell you how to use the new Household Pulse survey (with national\, state and city data since the pandemic’s onset).  Debbie Weinstein\, expert Census data trainer\, will provide hands-on guidance on how to use – and how to talk about – the data coming out in September. \nSpeaker Bios:  \nJared Bernstein joined the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in 2011 as a Senior Fellow. DESCRIPTION:An archive of this webinar is available here. \nThis webinar co-sponsored by the Coalition on Human Needs\, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights\, the Children’s Leadership Council\, and the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality. \nThe 2020 Census may seem like a long time away\, but decisions are being made now in Washington that will affect the accuracy of the count.  In the past\, the Census has undercounted young children\, communities of color\, and low income rural and urban households; very much related\, immigrants also are at risk of disproportionate undercounting.  This matters a lot:  much federal funding is distributed by formulas based on population and income\, and some communities will get less than they should if their residents are not accurately counted.  Further\, congressional\, state legislative\, and municipal districts are re-drawn every ten years based on the Census count.  In 2020\, for the first time\, the Census Bureau will promote the Internet as the primary way to answer the census\, which may increase the likelihood of an undercount in low-income communities. \nIn this webinar\, learn from national Census experts about how we can protect and improve on the Census’ accuracy\, so that low-income communities are not shortchanged.  This webinar will be useful for advocates and service providers working at the local\, state\, or federal levels.  If your communities receive funding based on federal or state formulas\, this webinar is important to you. \nPresenters:         \nTerri Ann Lowenthal is a nationally recognized expert on the U.S. census. We have known about this for a long time\, and steps to reduce the lead around us in previous decades have dramatically reduced the number of children suffering from lead poisoning. DESCRIPTION:An archive of this webinar is available here. \nUsing the New Poverty Data \nWednesday\, September 9\, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Eastern time \nThe annual Census Bureau data about poverty\, income\, and health insurance will be released on September 16 and 17.  There is increasing recognition that poverty is stubborn\, entrenched\, and damaging.  There is also a growing body of evidence about what works to reduce poverty. \nLearn how to get accurate information about your state and community – and how to use it to press for real solutions. \nPresenters: \nJared Bernstein\, Senior Fellow\, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities \nJared\, formerly Chief Economist and Economic Advisor for Vice President Biden and the Obama White House\, and now a prominent writer and commentator on economic issues\, will predict likely poverty and income trends in the new data.  And show us what works to reduce poverty – and what doesn’t. \nDeborah Weinstein\, Executive Director\, Coalition on Human Needs \nDebbie has been providing practical\, hands-on tips on using the Census survey data for a long time.  Each year\, she works to streamline the info so you can find and use poverty\, income\, health insurance\, education\, disability\, race/ethnicity\, employment and other data for the nation\, and for states and communities. \nThe webinar will give you step-by-step instructions to find the information you need\, including trends over time and comparisons to other states.  All registrants will be sent those instructions and follow-up help when the Census Bureau releases its new reports.
