SUMMARY:National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference
DESCRIPTION:The National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference\, co-sponsored by the Food Research & Action Center and Feeding America\, and in cooperation with the National CACFP Forum\, draws anti-hunger and anti-poverty advocates; federal\, state and local government officials; child advocates; representatives of food banks and food rescue organizations; sponsoring organizations and nutrition and anti-obesity groups. \nMembers of Congress\, Hill staff\, and key Administration officials attend the conference\, provide comments as part of plenary sessions and panels\, and join participants at receptions and special events. \nThe three-day event is packed with numerous networking opportunities\, interactive training\, content-rich sessions\, and a day on Capitol Hill to meet with Members of Congress and their key staffers. Participants share information and learn how to strengthen the quality and reach of federal nutrition programs\, learn best outreach and program practices from other states and localities\, fill in the gaps in food service for millions of low-income children\, and identify creative ideas for new and innovative approaches to ending hunger. \nThe National CACFP Leadership track brings together the CACFP community to discover best practices\, shape change\, meet with USDA officials\, and learn strategies for successfully implementing the new healthier CACFP meal pattern\, identify opportunities for cutting red tape\, and building a thriving CACFP program. \nThe conference plenaries and interactive\, content-rich workshops will be critical for exchanging ideas for how to ensure struggling households have the nutritional resources they need to weather the long-term fallout of the pandemic. \nThis year\, the National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference is going virtual to allow thousands of anti-hunger advocates from all across the country to safely and conveniently attend from home. You will hear from officials from the Biden-Harris Administration and the new Congress and capture the energy and networking opportunities that are the hallmark of this annual conference.

SUMMARY:YWCA Stand Against Racism: Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at the YWCA: \nYWCA USA’s 15th annual Stand Against Racism campaign will take place April 22 – 25\, 2021.\nWe invite YWCAs and allied groups to focus their events and organizing on the myriad of racial justice issues that impact the health and safety of communities of color. Most importantly\, we invite you to explore how From Declarations to Change: Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis can advance the work of justice in your community and empower people of color. \nStructural racism plays a large role in determining the conditions in which people are born\, grow\, work\, live\, and age. These factors affect people’s access to quality housing\, education\, food\, transportation\, political power\, and other social determinants of health. Understanding and addressing systemic racism from this public health perspective is crucial to eliminating racial and ethnic inequities\, and to improving opportunity and well-being across communities. \nOur collective efforts can root out injustice\, transform institutions\, and create a world that sees women\, girls\, and people of color the way we do: Equal. Powerful. Unstoppable. \nJoin Us For Stand Against Racism 2021!

SUMMARY:Poor People's Campaign: National Poor People’s & Low-Wage Workers Assembly
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 21st\, poor people\, low-wage workers\, moral and faith leaders\, advocates and our growing coalition of supporters will gather online simultaneously with a (socially-distant) rally in Raleigh\, North Carolina for a National Poor People’s and Low-Wage Workers Assembly. The Coalition on Human Needs is proud to support and participate. \nMore than 140 million people across the United States live in or near poverty\, struggle with low wages and are one emergency away from economic ruin. 250\,000 people die every year from poverty in the wealthiest nation on the planet. \nWe can’t be silent anymore in the face of this reality. \nThe First Reconstruction followed the Civil War. The civil rights struggles of the 20th century proved to be the Second Reconstruction. Our Third Reconstruction will be a revival of our constitutional commitment to establish justice\, provide for the general welfare\, end decades of austerity\, and recognize that policies which center the 140 million people\, who struggle financially\, are also good economic policies that can heal and transform our nation. \nHere’s what we are going to do: This Monday\, on June 21st at 5:30 p.m. ET we will gather online from all 50 U.S. states and territories. Together\, we will build a strong coalition of people to fight for our country’s Third Reconstruction. \nWe are already beginning to plan for the Poor People’s Campaign for next year—and Monday’s event is the first public step. Next June’s event will be a generationally-transformative in-person Moral March on Washington on June 18\, 2022. Together\, next summer\, we will flood the streets of Washington\, DC and create a national stage for the voices and leadership of people directly impacted by poverty\, racism and their interlocking injustices. \nRSVP for the digital rally here.

SUMMARY:Making August Recess Count: Building Support for Federal Recovery Legislation to Advance Racial Equity
DESCRIPTION:View a recording of this webinar here. See the slides here. \nThe Biden Administration’s proposed American Jobs and American Families Plans provide unprecedented opportunities to address deep-seated racial inequities in education\, employment\, health\, housing\, and income. With this Administration and Congress\, we have a very real chance of advancing once-in-a-lifetime legislation that would lift millions out of poverty\, help all kids reach their full potential\, get workers better pay and benefits\, and expand health coverage. \nBut none of this can become a reality without Congress. And while Congress adjourns for recess this August\, we have an ideal opportunity to build momentum for lasting change. Join the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities\, Community Change\, and the Coalition on Human Needs for a webinar on:\n• Why recovery legislation is so important\, and how it can advance racial equity;\n• What comes next\, and the strategy moving forward;\n• What tools\, resources\, and tactics you can use for engaging Congress this August recess. \nView a recording of this webinar here. SUMMARY:Inflation Truths: Why Build Back Better will help\, not hurt
DESCRIPTION:A captioned recording of the webinar is available at this link here. Find the slides at this link here. \nRising prices on food and essential goods affect everyone\, but they have a disproportionately high impact on people with low incomes. With recent inflation higher than it’s been in decades\, some have pointed the finger at government spending and worry President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda will contribute to further price increases. \nBut the facts tell a different story. Join the Coalition on Human Needs for a webinar that explains the inflationary moment we are in now: its causes\, solutions\, and government actions to alleviate current hardships. \nYou’ll hear from Jared Bernstein\, an economist for President Biden who is serving on the White House Council of Economic Advisers\, Josh Bivens\, Director of Research at the Economic Policy Institute\, and Rakeen Mabud\, chief economist at the Groundwork Collaborative. You’ll learn how we can address concerns over inflation as we continue the push for truly transformational investments in health care\, housing\, child care\, protecting against climate change\, and much more. \nEven if you can’t make the webinar\, sign up and you’ll be emailed a captioned recording of the webinar\, slides\, and other resources. \nA captioned recording of the webinar is available at this link here. SUMMARY:What’s Next for Build Back Better?
DESCRIPTION:While it has become increasingly clear there is no longer a path for the House-approved version of Build Back Better\, Congress can still reach a reasonable compromise on a scaled-back — but still significant — package that would provide relief to families who need it and invest in our future. Join the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Coalition on Human Needs to get the latest on what’s happening in the federal landscape and what we can do to ensure Congress reaches an agreement on a meaningful policy package that lowers costs for families and helps them deal with the everyday challenges they face. \nSee slides from this webinar here. \n

SUMMARY:Unfinished Business: The FY23 Biden Budget and what's next for human needs programs
DESCRIPTION:On March 28th President Biden released his proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget. This budget proposes vital investments in our future while providing for the urgent economic and public health investments that families need now. \nJoin the Coalition on Human Needs and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities to hear policy experts who will explain what you need to know about the President’s new budget and how it can be the blueprint for congressional action. \nThe Biden budget tackles the unfinished business before us. It pledges continued support for an economic package needed now\, including the expanded Child Tax Credit and EITC\, affordable child care\, health care\, housing\, and reduced prescription drug costs and climate change mitigation. And it proposes important expansions of mental health services\, affordable housing\, education funding\, more humane treatment of immigrants\, and much more. \nThe Biden budget shows we can afford the investments our nation needs while reducing the deficit\, by requiring the ultra-wealthy and corporations to pay a fairer share of taxes. \nYou’ll learn about these proposals\, and how to use them to get Congress to act on its once-in-a-generation opportunities to pass historic economic legislation that would lift millions out of poverty and reduce inequities that hold us back. The time to get the job done is now. \nSee slides from this webinar here.

SUMMARY:CHN’s 18th Annual Human Needs Hero Reception: July 7th
DESCRIPTION:All of Us:  Honoring forty years of the Coalition on Human Needs\n  \nOur second ever (and hopefully last!) virtual Human Needs Hero celebration will be held on Zoom this year! \nEvery year\, the Coalition on Human Needs gathers advocates\, from neophytes to veterans with decades of experience\, to celebrate our community’s steadfast commitment to standing up for the most vulnerable in our society. \nThis year is truly a landmark year for the Coalition on Human Needs\, as we celebrate four decades of commitment to meet the needs of people with low incomes. And while we want to celebrate our past\, we are truly looking toward the future as we continue to grow and diversify our coalition and ensure more and more voices stand united in support of a transformative human needs agenda. \nSo this year we’re doing things a little differently: Our 2022 Human Needs Heroes are the people and groups who make up the Coalition on Human Needs. \nWe are so proud of the exceptional organizations and activists who comprise our coalition\, from the founders who have been with us every step of the way to those who have just joined recently. Both coalition members and friends of the coalition have come together through truly exceptional and difficult circumstances to continue the fight against poverty\, systemic racism\, food and housing insecurity\, voter suppression\, and so many other injustices that contribute to widening inequality and hardship. The dedication of our community is truly heroic. \nJoin CHN in celebration of our human needs heroes! We are hoping you and/or your organization will sponsor the event and be listed in invitations and our program. \nThis is our only major fundraising event of the year and all proceeds raised go to supporting the work of the Coalition on Human Needs. So get out your best Zoom shirt\, pour your favorite drink\, and bring out your loved ones and pets for our 2022 Human Needs Hero reception. We can’t wait to celebrate forty years together. If you have any questions\, please reach out to Nicolai Haddal\, Field and (Virtual) Events Coordinator at nhaddal@chn.org or 202-223-2532 x115. \nIn addition to supporting CHN’s work\, sponsorship entitles you to ad space in the program. See information for how much space is available below. \nReady to sponsor? Use the form below to provide your tax-deductible contribution toward an organizational or individual sponsorship\, buy lines in the program\, or purchase reduced-cost admission for fellows and interns. Because this event is a great opportunity to bring the human needs community together\, we encourage sponsors to invite interns and new staff as well as experienced advocates who have shared much of CHN’s history. \nProgram Ad Deadline: \nPlease submit finished program ads electronically (no PDF’s\, please) to Nicolai Haddal\, at nhaddal@chn.org\, by COB Wednesday\, July 5th. \nPlease feel free to contact Nicolai by email or phone (202-223-2532 ext. 115) with any questions regarding sponsorship or ad formatting. \nImportant note: “Ticket” below refers to one sponsorship. When sponsoring\, please purchase only one sponsorship. You will receive a Zoom link to share with your organization.

SUMMARY:PANDEMIC AND RESPONSE: Using Census and Other Data to Track Poverty\, Hardship and the Impact of Aid During a Tumultuous Time Description
DESCRIPTION:You can view a recording of CHN’s training webinar here. Please also see the slides here\, \nThe Census Bureau will release new poverty\, income and health insurance data on September 13-15. This data will cover the pandemic year of 2021\, a year in which COVID cases surged early\, plunged and then rose again by year’s end. How did people fare\, and what differences were there by age\, race/ethnicity\, and income? Did the Child Tax Credit and other pandemic aid help? And while the survey data to be released in September only covers 2021\, what other data is available to tell us about what is happening now? \nThis webinar will show you how to find and use the 2021 national\, state and local data to be released in September\, how to make use of other and newer data showing changes in poverty by month\, and how many were unable to afford enough food or struggled to pay regular expenses through August of this year. You’ll learn how to navigate changes in the Census Bureau’s website and tools. \nYou’ll get an expert economic assessment about where we are now\, and learn how to use all the available information – some specific to your state or locality – to make the case for investments to reduce racial disparities and to help people with low incomes get ahead. \nThe webinar will be recorded; all registrants will get the live link\, with opportunities to ask questions\, and will also get the recording\, slides\, and follow-up resources. \nThe webinar will be close-captioned. \nYou can view a recording of CHN’s training webinar here. Please also see the slides here\,

SUMMARY:Webinar: Project 2025’s Threats to Human Needs Programs
DESCRIPTION:You’ve probably heard about Project 2025 – which produced a 900+-page compendium of extremist proposals put out by the right-wing Heritage Foundation (although the head of the project left the Heritage Foundation after Project 2025 proved intensely unpopular). So why should you know about these plans? Because they have been developed by many with connections to the former Trump Administration and are similar to certain proposals before Congress now. Whoever wins the election\, these proposals to shrink human needs programs may emerge – and we have to be ready. \nDuring this webinar\, you’ll learn about Project 2025 proposals to limit Medicaid and other health programs and to eliminate education and early childhood programs as well as limiting access to free school meals. You’ll also learn about efforts to politicize the federal workforce and limit protections for voters and consumers and against discrimination. And very important – you’ll hear about public opinion research showing just how unpopular these proposals are\, and how that can strengthen our advocacy for meeting human needs and for basic justice. \nWatch a recording of it here. \nList of speakers: \n\nJulie Tippens\, Director of the Legislative\, Political and Mobilization Department\, American Federation of Government Employees\nNatasha Murphy\, Director\, Health Policy\, Center for American Progress\nLily Klam\, Director\, Education Policy\, First Focus on Children\nMeeta Anand\, Senior Director\, Census and Data Equity\, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights\nBryan Bennett\, Navigator Research & Senior Director of Polling & Analytics at The Hub Project\nDeborah Weinstein\, Executive Director\, Coalition on Human Needs\, Moderator

SUMMARY:Webinar: How to Use Upcoming Poverty\, Income\, and Health Insurance Data
DESCRIPTION:In an election year\, it’s especially important to assess where we’ve made progress\, and what’s held us back. \nPlease join us on Thursday\, September 5th\, at 1 pm ET\, for a webinar to prepare you for the annual Census Bureau release of state and local poverty\, income\, and health insurance data. \nThe Census Bureau will release national poverty\, income\, and health insurance data on September 10\, followed by state and local data on these and many other topics from the American Community Survey on September 12. \nEvery year\, it’s important to understand income and health insurance trends – but it’s especially important now\, because the nation experienced a dramatic reduction in child poverty as a result of the 2021 Child Tax Credit\, only to see poverty surge after the CTC was allowed to expire. What has happened since? Have the Biden Administration’s vigorous efforts to promote Affordable Care Act health insurance\, along with more generous premium tax credits\, resulted in fewer uninsured people? \nWe’ll help you get ready to find and use the information coming out starting September 10 – with insightful analyses about poverty and health coverage\, and practical instructions on how to navigate the Census Bureau’s website – so you can get the state/local data you need\, and know how to find breakdowns by age\, race\, and ethnicity\, and how to show trends over time. \nList of speakers: \n\nChristopher Wimer\, Director of the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at the Columbia University School of Social Work\nStan Dorn\, Director\, Health Policy Project\, UnidosUS -Deborah Weinstein\, Executive Director\, Coalition on Human Needs\nEllen Teller\, Chief Government Affairs Officer\, Food Research and Action Center (FRAC)\, Moderator\n\nIf you are interested in the webinar but cannot join us\, please register anyway. All registrants will receive the recording\, slides\, and follow-up information. We welcome you to forward this to other advocates who may be interested.
