Join the National Day of Action to Protect Basic Needs Programs

After passing the House, the Senate has unveiled their tweaked version of the Big Brutal Budget Bill so they can try to pass it on the Senate floor next week.

Despite some politicians claiming that people will not be hurt by these proposals, you know the drill. This is the same proposal that cuts Medicaid and SNAP by more than $1 trillion, and raises costs on families by repealing clean energy tax credits and increasing the costs on everything from health care to groceries to household energy costs

That “Big Brutal Budget”—the one that means 16 million people will lose health coverage and will mean millions of families will lose SNAP benefits while some states could effectively end SNAP altogether.

We’re joining our coalition partners on Wednesday, June 18, for a critical day of action to demand the Senate reject cuts to human needs programs and protect health care and nutrition access for tens of millions of people.

Call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them to defend Medicaid, SNAP, and clean energy credits!

Calling is easy―and it’s very important. [Don’t remember your senators’ names?  The Capitol Switchboard operator at the number above will tell you and then connect you directly. Or click here and search by state.]

We’ve provided a suggested call script below to help with your call.

“Hello, my name is ___ and I live in ___. I am urging the senator to reject a budget that leaves 16 million Americans without health coverage and takes SNAP from families in our community while gutting our state’s budget. This  will increase costs of energy, health care, groceries, and more.

To cut these critical programs for low-income and working families to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires is outrageous.

Congress is moving too far, too fast — but it’s not too late to change course. Instead of cutting basic needs programs, Congress should focus on helping families who need support. Please tell the Senator to VOTE NO on any budget package that cuts basic needs programs. Thank you.”

Once you’ve called one of your senators, then call the other―they both need to hear from you today! And if your family benefits from any of the programs being cut, share your story with your Senate offices to have an even bigger impact.

Poverty is a policy choice, not an inevitability. Investments in some of our nation’s most vulnerable communities will have positive effects on families today and for generations to come. Thank you for making your voice heard.
