Update: House may vote on Head-Smackingly bad Health Care Repeal soon – Tell your Rep to Vote NO

|

April 27, 2017

Last week, we put out a blog on the very bad health care repeal bill revived, zombie-style, by making it a lot worse. Speaker Ryan may be close to getting enough votes to pass it, but people around the country are fighting back. You should join them.
Any representative should hear from his or her constituents about this. What follows is a list that will not have last-minute updates on positions, of House members and their previously known positions on the repeal bill. (No vote was taken the last time, so this is pooled info on what they said, if available.) If you live in any of these districts, or work in an organization that covers or serves people in these districts, your call is especially important. If they are shown as voting “No,” ask their office to confirm that and thank them. If they’re undecided, tell them as a constituent and/or service provider, you want them to oppose ending health coverage for 24 million people, and gutting insurance for countless others. This bill would allow states to drop protections for pre-existing conditions, and would allow states to drop coverage now required under the law. Back to the bad old days: in theory, people with cancer, diabetes, hypertension… could purchase insurance, but the price would be so high they won’t be able to afford it (especially since the repeal bill will take away subsidies). More bad: maternity benefits won’t have to be in the basic package, so women will go back to having to pay more for insurance. And still atrociously bad: the Medicaid expansion would be phased out, hurting many millions, and all the cuts in health services will pay for hundreds of billion$ in tax cuts for the rich and for the health industry.

You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Rep’s office, or if you’re having a hard time getting through, go to www.house.gov and look for your Rep by typing your zip code in, upper right – you’ll then get to their website and see district office phone numbers there.
