They’re Just Babies on Capitol Hill
Small but mighty voices thundered into Capitol Hill earlier this month. On Tuesday June 9th, my almost two-year-old and I took a break from our summer workday to head downtown for the 10th annual Strolling Thunder event hosted by CHN member Zero to Three. This event brings parents, and especially babies, from across the country to make their voices heard throughout the halls of Congress.
Members of Congress from both parties spoke to the importance of bipartisan support for policies that affect families. Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) were just some of the elected officials that showed up for families on this day. Parents spoke about their lived experiences, what positive impact quality child care and early learning opportunities have had on their families.
As a parent to twin 9-year-olds, and an almost 2-year-old, it’s incredibly important to me that we teach children about civic engagement as early as possible. I want my children to know that even when they can’t vote, they can still influence the policy process. This event was a perfect example of how even though these children can’t participate at the ballot box, they have the ability to make an impact on the discussion. The stronger the start we give our children, the better society is for it.
Now it’s your turn. If these babies can make their tiny voice heard, there’s no reason you can’t do the same. Please contact your Member of Congress to tell them “It’s Time to Invest in Babies!”
